Conch Republic Seafood Company, Key West
We arrived in Key West at lunchtime after completing the unique drive down Highway 1 and after quickly checking out the place we were staying that night decided the first thing we needed was food!
We headed into the middle of Key West and quickly came across this restaurant located right on the seafront. It looked intriguing, a huge area covered with a roof but completely open at the sides.It was a very hot day and the idea of sitting in the open with the refreshing fine water sprays that were placed at the edges of the restaurant wafting gently over us every now and then was appealing. So, we got ourselves a table and took a second look around. We could see large tanks of fish and various sea creatures in the middle of the restaurant near the bar and a huge copper tank that the waiter informed us was an old still. He told us that the bar served over 80 different kinds of rum if we wanted to try any of them, but after studying the drinks menu we decided on wine as they had a few good choices of this too.
The menu was not surprisingly very heavily seafood biased but there were also steak and burgers available if you prefered. Our children chose the decidedly unadventurous chicken goujons and fries from the children’s menu but hubby and I decided the seafood choices looked too good to miss. Whilst reading through the menu we had seen some of the dishes being taken to other diners and the portions looked huge, so we decided that as we wanted to try a variety of things we would choose two starters each instead of having a main course. The waiter was fine with this and was very helpful explaining the dishes. We ended up choosing the local speciality jerk spiced Key West pink shrimp, steamed oysters (all for hubby, I gave these a miss having had a raw one once and vowing never again! ) scallops with pineapple rum glaze (my favourite, yummm) and crab stuffed mushrooms with plum glaze. Along with some yellow rice which came too and a house salad this was loads to eat. We couldn’t find room to squeeze in Key Lime Pie although it looked appetising.
As we were eating a singer arrived and began playing his guitar and singing Bob Dylan songs with the occasional bit of Beatles and Bob Marley thrown in too. We felt like we could have stayed there all afternoon chilling out, drinking and just enjoying being there in such lovely surroundings but the kids eventually began to get restless and we decided we really should explore Key West a bit more. So, reluctantly we left having had some very tasty and interesting food in the most relaxing and idyllic setting.Page added on: 24 March 2007
