Clearwater

Florida Guide > Other Florida

A holiday to Orlando is never complete in my opinion without a day trip to Clearwater/St. Petersburgh! The drive to Clearwater takes approx 1¼ hours from the US 27.

Clearwater has a beautiful stretch of white soft sand and is a lively beach which is great for all ages with lifeguards always close by. Rafts are welcome which you can purchase from the store nearby.

There is plenty for everyone at Clearwater – arts, museums, water sports, cafes and restaurants. There is a pier where you can watch the fishermen during the day, and at night there is live entertainment which includes street performers juggling, doing magic and musical and dance acts. Near the pier is a playground for the children too. There are also various arts and crafts stalls along the pier. A few miles past Pier 60 is Caledesi Island State Park, which was voted in the top 5 American beaches.

Take a ride on the Sea Screamer which goes from the Marina just behind the pier and see the dolphins. Be warned though that you can get very wet so may want to take a change of clothes!

There is a crazy golf a short distance walk from the beach which will keep adults and children amused, and on the way home why not drive along the coast along the St. Petersburgh stretch of beach and see some beautiful sunsets!

Clearwater has a “Jolly Trolley” to enable you to see more of the area and there are two routes, one trolley covering the Clearwater Beach to Sand Key, and the second going to Downtown Clearwater and back, each with short stops along the way and lasting approximately 30 minutes, and very inexpensive too! So you have a choice of going from one end of the beach to the other or exploring downtown Clearwater!

Why not visit the Clearwater Marine Aquarium while you are there which is within walking distance of the beach. It is only small and dedicated to the rescue and rehabilitation of marine mammals and sea. It is educational and interesting with daily feedings, presentations and hands-on opportunities.

If you feel like a spot of shopping on your way back from Clearwater/St. Petersburgh then why not call in at Westfield Countryside Mall, which also has a large ice skating rink (Address - 27001 US Highway 19 North, Suite 2096, Clearwater).
