Weeki Wachee is situated in Springhill at the junction of the State Route 19 and Highway 19.
Weeki Wachee became a State Park in november 2008 and since then a fellowship between Park staff and volunteers is striving to restore this park to its former glory and even better. The park first opened its doors in 1947 and had become somewhat run down in the recent past.
Of course you all know of this park for its mermaid shows and the Parks department have pledged to keep this attraction running and currently they are cleaning up the glass windows to afford the best view from the submerged theatre.
Once you have seen the show, what else is there to amuse you? well there is plenty. First how about taking the river boat? spend some relaxing time being taken down the waterways that reveal the old Florida with a knowledgable guide pointing out things of interest. I have never taken a boat ride in Florida that was less than wonderful.
Next you could head for the beach where you could eat your lunch at one of the picnic tables provided and have a go at the flume ride. Flume ride is probably best taken before lunch for obvious reasons!
The animal shows are popular and you should check your schedule for these so you do not miss any.
In all there are 27 acres to enjoy both on and off the water and people come here to kayak and canoe and you can also scuba dive in the 72 degree spring waters. If you wish to dive you must contact the park in advance to check the regulations.
Animal lovers will be pleased to know that they are likely to see alligators, manatees, snakes and turtles and among the bird life are stilts, hawks and maybe a bald eagle.
There are various food concessions dotted around the park so you do not need to pack a picnic but if you do, then rest assured that you can find a pretty spot to eat your lunch.
This park costs a bit more to enter than other State Parks and there is a $3 parking fee. Fees vary from around $14 when Buccaneer Bay is closed up to around $30 for a 2 day ticket.
If you are in Florida for a longer stay you may want to consider a 3 month ticket for around $60.
