South Beach Miami - Art Deco Area

Florida Guide > Places to Visit

If you fancy seeing a bit more of Florida during your stay why not take a trip to Miami.

Miami is around 4 hours' drive from the Orlando area and so it is worth staying over night or even two nights to enable you to have a good look around.

We decided to stay just for one night. We were on our way back to our villa in the Orlando area after a few days away at the Florida Keys and Miami seemed a good place to break our journey and stay overnight.

I had for a long time wanted to see the famous Art Deco Area and so we researched and booked a hotel located in the South Beach area so that we would be in the right location to see the Art Deco buildings.

We arrived during a thunder storm and booked in to our hotel. The rain soon stopped and we decided to walk along the Ocean Drive to see the Art Deco hotels. We weren' t disappointed! There are some wonderful examples of Art Deco and mostly these buildings are still in everyday use - mainly as hotels. The styles and colors were amazing! At night the area is busy with people enjoying the nightlife of the various restaurants and clubs. We stopped to get a bite to eat in one of the restaurants.

The following morning we woke early and decided to have another walk around the area we had discovered the previous evening. We wanted to see it in daylight and take some photos. We weren' t disappointed! We also took the opportunity of walking along part of South Beach on the glorious white sand. It was a shame that our itinerary din' t allow for more time to enjoy the beach but we needed to get packed up and head back to Orlando.

We took a lot of photos of the area and then wandered back to our hotel - going on a small detour through the adjacent streets where the buildings were more of the Mediterranean style and the streets were paved in this style also.

We wished we had more time to spend there - but for our first visit to Miami it was a nice taster. We will for sure visit again in the future.

Another idea is to fly in to Miami rather than Orlando and perhaps spend a day or so there before moving on to Orlando.
