Quite some vehicle – The Jeep Commander

The car that you rent whilst in Florida is a significant part of your vacation experience. Most of us can almost certainly remember the differing types of vehicles that we have rented over the years whilst enjoying the delights of Orlando.

During our last trip in the summer I chose to rent a 4X4 as one of the cars selected for the vacation, using the Dollar rent a car service available through this website. I was fully expecting to be supplied with a Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo which is an excellent vehicle and one that I have written about before. However on this occasion I was lucky enough to be handed a brand new 4.7 litre V8 Jeep Commander. This is one of the latest versions in Jeep’s portfolio with a variety of differing engine types and trim levels.

Our vehicle sat somewhere in the middle of the range but from the very outset it felt very luxurious. Having driven the Cherokee Laredo with its excellent 3.7 litre V6 power unit I knew immediately that there was something even more special about the Commander. The engine and transmission were just about as silky and smooth as it gets delivering all the power you need when you need it, no matter how loaded up the car is. Although the Commander is not as ‘handsome’ as the Cherokee from the outside, i.e. it is boxier, and more traditionally 4X4 looking, it more than makes up for this with it’s comfortable, well appointed interior and host of useful features. These include 7 seats, front and rear air conditioning, five speed auto transmission, power adjustable driving seat, quality radio CD player with socket for an MP3 player, rear opening window and rear parking assistance sensors …. – and these were only the features I noticed!

Once behind the driving seat you are immediately aware of the extra height and superb all round visibility. This increased vision is very useful when navigating around Florida and positions you at the same height of the abundance of high rised vehicles in the USA. The box like shape of the Commander also makes it very easy to manoeuvre as there are no blinds spots (well I didn’t notice any) and each corner of the car can be clearly established from within the vehicle. A great feature of the Commander is the 7 seats, although I would suggest that the 2 rear seats are more suited to children than adults. All of the rear seats can be folded flat which is useful for carrying luggage and of course all that Orlando shopping!

Probably the only consequence to the Commander was the fuel economy which at 14mpg was on the high side. However, this is one of the best reasons for renting such a vehicle in the US. My one and only visit to the fuel station took the tank from one quarter full to full for just $36. I’d certainly recommend the Commander if you’re looking for something just a bit different.
