Pirates of the Caribbean
My niece and I love this ride at Magic Kingdom and first discovered it one very wet Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party night. Initially we went in just to get out of the rain but have returned several times since. The ride takes about ten minutes and is over far too quickly. There is so much to see with the Audio-Animatronics figures that include pirates, villagers, animals and birds. Each time we go we spot something that we have not seen before.
Although this ride is noisy and there is the odd skeleton about there always seem to be quite a few young children on the ride and they do not seem to be frightened. I think there is so much going on it is easy to distract them from potentially scary bits. Everyone loves the music “A Pirates Life for Me! ”
You travel back in time to the West Indies of the 1700s, when Spain brought gold from the New World back home and Pirates ruled the waters. Pirates of the Caribbean is located in Adventureland, in the Caribbean Plaza. The architecture resembles the 18th Century West Indies. Originally Pirates of the Caribbean opened in Walt Disney World in 1973 but was revamped in 2006.
The queues can vary and as this is not a Fastpass ride you often have to wait for quieter times of the day to go on it. Most of the queue is indoors so whether it is raining or very hot you are sheltered from the weather. At the end of the queue you board a passenger boats go down a small drop (about 15 feet) and find yourself in the midst of the port of a Caribbean city under attack by a pirate frigate. You start by winding your way through a cave with the sounds of cannon fire off in the distance.
Around the riverbend, into the town, you find a rowdy group of pirates in search of gold and adventure. Pirates chasing women, women chasing pirates, pirates in jail, and a final scene with drunken pirates surrounded by gold treasure.
Look out for Hidden Mickey’s in the Treasure Room. They are in the iron work on the bottom of four lamps on the left side, one on each of two columns and two more on either side of the archway walls.
Check your daily Times Guide for the schedule because as you leave Captain Hook and Mr. Smee from Peter Pan can often be seen here.
If you are hungry when you leave not far away is the Pecos Bill Cafe which offers a large area of indoor seating. Food items include burgers, wraps, salads and more.
