Naples

If you fancy travelling a little further afield, during your stay in Orlando, we can thoroughly recommend a trip south to Naples. An overnight stay is recommended, as it really is too far to travel there and back in one day and enjoy Naples at the same time.

The quick and easy route to Naples is via the I4 to Tampa then I75 all the way to Naples. We preferred a more scenic route via Route 27 to Haines City where we turned on to Route 17 via Winter Haven, with its myriad of lakes. We followed Route 17 all the way to Punta Gorda where we joined the I75 for the last 60 miles into Naples.

Naples is a refined town on the west coast. The beaches are wonderful, with pure white sand stretching for miles. It is a prosperous town so the properties are smart and well cared for, the streets are wide and uncluttered. There is no “strip”, no mile after mile of fast food and discount outlet stores. There is instead a more traditional Town Centre, the main shops being located in Fifth Avenue. At the junction of Fifth Avenue and 3rd Street, turn left to take you to the Old Town which has some impressive buildings and a variety of restaurants. It is worth taking time to stroll round both Fifth Avenue and the Old Town as both have an elegance and charm about them. The Old Town is particularly exciting in the evening as the bars and restaurants are bustling with activity and the area comes to life. Further along, just past the Old Town is Tin City which is a raised boardwalk lined with little boutiques, cafes and bars in the old dock area, also worth a visit.

If you have time, pay a visit to Clam Pass Park. It is located next to the Registry Hotel in Seagate Drive, North Naples, and is a ¾-mile boardwalk which meanders through the cypress trees to the beach. If you don’t have the time or energy to walk, there is a free buggy shuttle service operating from the car park – or do like we did, walk there ride back.

This is a glimpse of what Naples has to offer from a half-day visit. Our impression was extremely favourable and this is definitely a town we would like to come back to in the future and explore in more depth.
