Gatorland

Florida Guide > Other Activities

Gatorland is one of Florida’s oldest attractions. The same family own it now as they did when it was started.

It is on Orange blossom trail, not very far up from the Florida Mall and only 15 – 20 minutes from Disney world.

It is an idea day out for younger members of the family and can be visited in a day trip easily. There is so much for them to see and do (the adults have a great time too)

It is set in 110 acres, in which a mixture of shows, exhibits and nature trails can be found. On the swamp walk there is an observation tower high up enabling you to look right across the breeding marshes and park.

There is a petting zoo and all sorts of exhibits including snakes, parrots, birds, bears, zebra’s, goats, as well as the Alligators. An aviary where the Lorikeets eat from your hand.

There is a relaxed atmosphere there and can make a pleasant change from the excitement of the theme parks.

There are several shows, a gator Jumparoo, here the trainers encourage Alligators to jump up to 5 feet out of the water to grab chickens from a wire! it is as well as being good fun to watch educational as they explain a lot of things about the Gators while they are doing it. Gator wrestling, where the gator wranglers pull a 6 to 8 foot gator out of the water and demonstrate various things like survival tactics, stunts and how to make a gator go to sleep. They also let some of the youngsters get their photo taken actually sitting on a live Gator. The up close encounters, a snake show where you get to prove that you are not scared of snakes and you can have your photo taken holding a baby gator and a snake round your neck at the same time! how brave is that ?

If you feel a bit peckish there is a smoke house that serve gator ribs, burgers and nuggets.

It costs $19. 95 entry which is a reasonable price to pay for a day’s entertainment.

The shop has just about everything you could ever possibly find to do with gators, ranging from books and clothing, jewellery, ornaments, sweet shaped like gators, gator heads and even real gator meat, yuk ! they say it is quite a delicacy but one I declined to try !
