Boma Buffet-Animal Kingdom Lodge
No visit to the Disneyworld in Orlando area is complete without a trip to Animal Kingdom Lodge and sampling the Boma Buffet. This has become a firm favourite on our ‘must do’ as opposed to our ‘to do’ list.
Situated in what I think is the best Disney hotel, Animal Kingdom Lodge -the Boma Buffet is a veritable feast.
You can choose between eating there for breakfast/brunch or evening dinner. I have tried both and both have their merits. Breakfast is cheaper and gives you a great start for the day. Dinner is more expensive but there’s different things on the menu. The menu varies but it’s great to see the staple favourites are usually always kept on. I love the bobote (not sure of the spelling) but it’s a solid sort of scrambled egg, with mince and raisins or sultanas-sounds dreadful but is gorgeous.
The food is set out buffet style –but in sort of ‘pods’ so you can dip in and out of various ones-you are not just going in a long line. I think you tend to get just what you need and you don’t have food getting cold while you queue for ages just to get back to your table.
The Animal Kingdom Lodge has its theme set in Africa and it looks very atmospheric with dimmed lights, gorgeous colours and patterns-there’s so much to see and your eyes dart everywhere. I find it very pleasing and restful-just what Disney want their vacationers to feel.
The theme continues down in the buffet with the flavours of Africa-the food is pleasantly spicy but not harsh and hot. You are served a refreshing juice with your meal, the servers wear lovely African themed clothes and everyone is helpful and friendly. There is so much to choose from-prime rib, chicken, fish and then more traditional dishes. They have soups and salads, fruits, dips, sauces and desserts, cakes and cookies. There is some American diner foods to cater for children who maybe cannot tolerate the African food-but theres always something you can eat.
It is best now to make a reservation as it gets unbelievably busy-you can turn up but there is often a long wait. You can go out from the hotel lobby and look at the animals on the savannah. It’s very pretty and there’s giraffe, wildebeest and thomson’s gazelles grazing just below you. There’s often a park ranger of south African origin to answer your questions. I spoke to one lovely lady from South Africa and she told me that a lot of the food in the buffet was the sort of food her mother cooked at home. Naturally in the winter months when the days are shorter you won’t have the daylight to see the animals at the dinner buffet-so you may wish to come to the breakfast one instead.
The breakfast buffet is about $5 less than the evening one and finishes around 10-30am. The evening one runs from 5-10pm. If you are going to just turn up then I would advise well before 7pm. In order to get into the lodge you need to show some picture ID to the security guard-so do make sure you carry something with you.
